پیچیدگی و گستردگی مفهوم توسعه پایدار ایجاب می‏‌کند که با ابزار برنامه‌‏ریزی بتوان ارتباط بهینه‏‌ای میان تمام ابعاد توسعه ایجاد نمود و کلیه اصول پایداری را برآورده ساخت. در این پژوهش، با بررسی ادبیات موضوع و الگوهای سایر کشورها، مدل فرایندی برنامه‌‎ریزی توسعه پایدار به‌‏دست می‏‌آید. با بررسی 30 شرکت تابعه صنعت نفت ایران در مورد برنامه‌‏ریزی با رویکرد توسعه پایدار نتایج پژوهش نشان می‌‏دهد که ارزشیابی به‌‏عمل‏‌آمده با شش گام اصلی (فرایند آغازین برنامه‌‏ریزی، فرایند مشارکت دادن ذی‏‌نفعان، فرایند تهیه پیش‌‏نویس برنامه، فرایند تدوین چشم‏‌انداز، فرایند تهیه چارچوب نتایج، و فرایند برنامه‌‏ریزی برای اجرا)، و چهارده گام فرعی (تشکیل هسته اصلی برنامه‏‌ریزی، تهیه برنامه کاری، تهیه دستورالعمل‏‌ها، تعیین ذی‏‌نفعان برنامه‏‌ریزی، شناسایی مشکلات به تفکیک جغرافیا، شناسایی مشکلات مرتبط با موضوع توسعه پایدار، تعیین ذی‌‏نفعان توسعه پایدار، تعیین منابع حل مشکلات، تدوین چشم‌‏انداز، تدوین اهداف، تدوین خروجی‏‌ها، تدوین شاخص‏ها، تعیین منابع اجرای برنامه، و تخصیص مسئولیت‏‌ها) در سطح به‌‏نسبت خوبی است و تنها نیازمند بهبود در دو فرایند فرعی تدوین شاخص‌‏ها و تعیین مسئولیت‌‏های اجرایی است.
