Objective: Organizations are systems of shared meanings that are developed and sustained through symbolic processes. Organizational meaning can be achieved through symbols. Symbolism expresses the ideology or value system of an organization, providing a prism through which organizational stakeholders can share their experiences, successful actions, as well as ineffective aspects of organizational work with their feelings. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the causal factors and consequences of symbolism in government organizations.
Methodology: This research was applied in terms of purpose and survey and exploratory in terms of data collection method. Besides, it followed a deductive-inductive research philosophy. The statistical population of the research consisted of experts, including senior managers and human resource managers of government organizations. The sample size was selected using purposive sampling method and based on the principle of theoretical saturation. Content analysis and coding method were used for data analysis in the qualitative part and fuzzy cognitive map method was used in the quantitative part.
Findings: The findings of the qualitative part include identifying the types of causal factors and consequences of organizational symbolism, and the findings of the quantitative part relate to prioritizing of these factors. Accordingly, the most key factors affecting organizational symbolism are transformational leadership style, attention to international standards, and creating a culture of sharing knowledge and experiences. Also, the most important consequences of organizational symbolism are increasing the organization's income, facilitating internal communications, and strengthening and stabilizing organizational values.
