هدف: با فرض اینکه افراد شاغل واجد شرایط احراز مشاغل باشند، انتظار می­رود که وظایف شغلی خود را با کیفیت قابل قبولی انجام دهند. در چنین وضعیتی، اتلاف وقت در محیط کاری از سوی کارکنان مسئله دیگری است که باید به آن پرداخته شد. بنابراین، تحلیل اتلاف وقت و شناخت ساعات کار مفید افراد ضرورتی اجتناب­ناپذیر است که هدف اصلی پژوهش حاضر است.
روش‌شناسی: جامعه آماری در این پژوهش کارکنان ستادی در یک شرکت خدماتی در تهران هستند که وظایف شغلی تعریف شده دارند. از میان جامعه آماری، 92 نفر به روش نمونه در دسترس انتخاب شدند و پرسشنامه­ها میان آنان توزیع شد. روایی محتوایی پرسشنامه با استفاده از نظر خبرگان و پایایی آن به روش آلفای کرونباخ مورد بررسی قرار گرفت.
یافته‌ها: نتایج به­دست آمده نشان داد که اتلاف وقت سیستماتیک بین کارکنان شرکت متداول است و میانگین ساعات کار مفید آنان در حدود 5/5 ساعت است.
 اصالت پژوهش: پژوهش قابل استنادی دربارۀ ساعات کار مفید کارکنان در ایران انجام نشده است. بیشتر مطالب منتشر شده در این حوزه بحث­های روزنامه ای است که چندان قابل استناد نیستند.  در این پژوهش، ساعات کار مفید به روش شناخت اتلاف وقت فردی محاسبه شده است که از قابلیت اعتماد بالایی برخوردار است.
