The purpose of this paper is to identify the most important components influencing the energy sustainability and the study of relationships among energy sustainability dimensions by taking an institutional approach. Hence, a synthesized framework based on the Williamson institutional hierarchy and causal relational framework of IAEA/IEA has been proposed by the selection of countries as units of analysis and designs a full sampling by a full sampling plan of 196 countries. The final sample consists of 110 countries with complete information available in reliable international reports and databases by 2016. It analyzes main components influential in energy sustainability and interrelationships between sustainability dimenensions by using partial least squares method. The results of path analysis show that both informal institutions as social capital and formal institutions like good governance of institutional environment and market have a positive influence on the economic, social and environmental aspects of the sustainability of energy systems. Also, the effect of economic sustainability on social sustainability dimensions and both economic and social sustainability on environmental sustainability are significant. In other words, all sustainability dimensions with different degrees contribute to improve or degenerate environmental sustainability at national level.
