Information systems and information technology discuss topics in organizations around the world. The enterprises in which they are discussed vary in size and industry type, yet there is a common recognition that the manner in which these systems are used will not only influence the success of the organization but can change the world in which they function. The challenge to managment of organizations today is to achieve success in a world that is changing daily. We explore the importance of information and the way information systems are changing organizations. In creasingly, those firms that have a good information system and use it in the management of their organizations are much more likely to be successful, and those that do not will fall farther behind. In this essay, we introduce information and information systems. Then we show their importance to management. We also explore the different types of information systems, showing how each type has distinctive characteristics and yet uses a common focus and foundation.
